DR OZ ON GUARANA

“Are you looking for a natural way to boost your energy in the morning?  I just learned a great tip from Dr. Oz!  Breakfast is one of my favorite meals of the day.  I love to eat my Kashi oatmeal in the morning.  I feel it is very filling and delicious too!  I have been feeling like I need an energy booster so I checked Dr. Oz’s website for a natural way to do so.  He suggests using Guarana Seed Powder.  This powder comes from the Guarana plant which is abundant in Brazil.   All you have to do is take a small amount, maybe about a teaspoon and sprinkle onto your oatmeal or cereal in the morning!  So ditch the coffee in the morning and try some Guarana Seed Powder!”

March Contest Winner Angela Lee is a HAPPY Nibbbler!!

Angela's Story: How she is creating her own success!
I have finally found a way to enjoy my love for chocolate through NibMor.  Okay, wow.. where do I start.. My life in the past year has changed so much.  I was a smoker of nine years quit a couple times for a short amount of time, but always went right back.   Well March 28, 2012 marks 1 year of being cigarette free.  That was just the start of my 'Take my Life back' challenge.  After quitting smoking I  packed on quite a few pounds.  I found comfort and relief in yummy sweets and baked goods.  Seeing how I bake for a living.. it wasn't hard making whatever sounded good at the moment and devouring it immediately after it was cool enough to eat! This went on until December 28, 2011.  I saw myself in a picture with my nephews and was completely speechless!  I could not believe that the person I was looking at in the picture was me.  I knew that it was time to get control of this.. I felt like I let go of one habit and picked up another.  I started on my weight loss journey that very day and have never looked back! At first I tried to completely keep away anything that was flavorful, sweet or that I like at all. Yes, I started to loose, but I knew that I would never be successful if I kept it up this way.  So I did my research and found something that I thought would work for me.  I found loads of great info!  The first thing I found was Weight Watchers.. I love the program. It is easy to follow and allows me to still indulge just a bit all the while still loosing weight and being healthy.  I started to pay closer attention to detail in what I was eating and the quality of food that I was putting into my body.  I love healthy food like veggies, fruits, chicken, fish and nuts .. so honestly.. it was not a hard thing to adapt to.. The one thing I always found myself trying to do.. was to find that one sweet thing I could have, but not feel guilty, but most importantly, that fit into my lifestyle change.. I went to the Whole Foods.. and spent a few hours slowly going through the store and picked up a cart full of stuff that I wanted to try.. enter NIBMOR CHOCOLATE!  At first I was a little shocked that the ingredients were so good but along with that .. half the bar was only 3 points!! (110 cals) I surely thought I was wasting my money.. I did not think it would be something that I would be able to  compare to some of my favorite chocolate brands.  So when I opened it and took the first bite.. with God as my witness the first thing I said was " Wow, this is the best chocolate I have ever tasted!"  I thought to myself.. hmm.. I better hide the other half of this in my purse so Mike (fiance) does not find and eat it!! But I feel like I can enjoy this chocolate bar and still be successful!  As of today I am at a loss of 37 lbs and I have 60 more to go! It definitely helps having NibMor around!  I can curve my cravings while staying on track.. So if I win this contest or not... I am glad to share this with you and I thank you for allowing me some freedom! :)

Sincerely,

Angela Lee

Coffee Anyone? OR...maybe we should make that a tea!! + Springification Jammin' Playlist

JLove’s Interview: Coffee Anyone? OR...maybe we should make that a tea!!

Do you struggle in understanding why and how to let go of your coffee addiction? You are not alone.

Nearly seven years ago, I was a true coffee (aka caffeine) addict, drinking nearly two pots of coffee a day. YIKES!! Once I learned what coffee did to my body I was DONE. I went from two pots/day to zero in a matter of one week. If I can do it so can you and I spoke with Caroline MacDougall, founder of Teeccino (http://www.teeccino.com) for some great advice on the why and how of avoiding caffeine to help you.

JLove: Why is caffeine something to avoid?

Caroline:  Caffeine is a drug that triggers the body's "Fight-or-Flight" syndrome which pumps up the production of cortisol and epinephrine, the major stress hormones. If you have a life threatening emergency, these hormones will help your chances of survival by producing a number of changes like flooding the blood with glucose, constricting blood vessels to your brain and extremities and suppressing the immune system and digestion. Everything is sacrificed in order to help your large muscles run quickly away from danger. In today's modern life, we don't make use of all these physical changes as we sit at desks, in cafes, or at meals. Thus we experience a rush with a subsequent crash that leads to increased appetite from blood sugar swings, increased tension and anxiety, and insomnia. Chronically elevated stress hormones have a multitude of long term effects on the body which lead to chronic health problems.

JLove: Yes, great information Caroline. Will you help the readers understand the moderation or abstinence comparison with caffeine?

Caroline: It depends on the individual as to whether some caffeine is tolerated well or not. Then too, it depends on their age as the older we get, the less caffeine we can tolerate. As the body ages, the adrenal glands produce less DHEA, our youth & longevity hormone, and more cortisol, the stress hormone that causes so many problems when it is chronically elevated. Women are more sensitive to caffeine's effects than men typically are. The liver detoxifies many pharmaceutical drugs using the same pathway as it uses to detoxify caffeine, so if you are on birth control pills, for instance, caffeine will stay in your system longer. A woman may find that a cup of coffee in the morning is still affecting her sleep at night! So each person needs to find out for themselves how caffeine is affecting them and the only real way to do this is to stop any caffeine for at least a few weeks in order to give your body enough time to recover and restore its natural energy production. Then you can see what symptoms or other effects caffeine might have been causing and decide for yourself how much caffeine to consume and when to do so.

JLove: These are good points. Thank you. So, what do you find are successful methods for quitting caffeine?

Caroline:  Quitting caffeine cold turkey can really be painful so I recommend a weaning process over 2 weeks. You can do this by blending your regular coffee with a caffeine-free coffee alternative like Teeccino. You start with 3/4 coffee to 1/4 Teeccino and then slowly decrease the amount of coffee and increase the amount of Teeccino. Your body will adjust to the lower quantity of caffeine gradually so you won't get headaches which come from restoring more oxygen to the brain or experience as much fatigue as your adrenal glands recover from being stressed by caffeine.

JLove: Excellent idea. I love this. Will you explain why Teeccino may be a better choice versus other tea?
Caroline: If you're a coffee drinker, you are used to a full-bodied brew with roasted flavor. Teeccino Herbal Coffee tastes like coffee whereas teas taste watery and leafy so they don't deliver the same satisfaction that coffee drinkers are used to. Plus coffee drinkers typically have a brewing ritual that they love and don't want to give up. I created Teeccino by blending roasted herbs like carob, barley and chicory with roasted nuts like almonds and ramon nuts, a traditional food of the Maya civilization, to deliver that coffee-like flavor in a ground form so Teeccino can be brewed in any kind of coffee maker. Recently, we introduced Teeccino in Tee-bags that steep just like tea because we found that tea drinkers enjoy Teeccino as much as coffee drinkers and many Teeccino customers want a more convenient way to brew a single cup of Teeccino on-the-go.

JLove: These ingredients in Teeccino are so clean and pure AND I love the taste. Does Teeccino offer any health benefits?

Caroline: Just like coffee and tea, Teeccino has a number of water-soluble antioxidants that help protect the body from free radical stress. Carob, barley, almonds, dates, figs and ramon nuts are all very high in antioxidants. Teeccino is also non-acidic and Teeccino's potassium helps alkalize the body. A cup of Teeccino gives people an energy boost that comes from nutrients, not stimulants so you'll feel steady energy rather than a jolt and crash. There is a gram of soluble fiber in a cup of Teeccino which along with the potassium makes Teeccino really healthy for the heart. The chicory root in Teeccino contains inulin which extracts during brewing. Inulin is a prebiotic which supports a health population of beneficial microflora. With 650mg of inulin in a cup of Teeccino, you can double the amount of inulin you get in today's modern diet by drinking just a couple of cups of Teeccino a day. Inulin also increases the absorption of minerals and supports the immune system so getting more of it daily can have really positive effects on your health!

JLove: Wonderful! Thank you so much for all this insightful information Caroline.

Tofu Recipe + What You May Not Know About Reading The Ingredient List

Let’s talk about tofu!  I have been crazy busy so I have been buying organic marinated tofu in all sorts of flavors (so convenient! Love the teriyaki flavor- makes an awesome stir fry).  It cooks up fast, fills you up and makes you feel good all over!  Did you know, tofu is high in protein?  In fact, for every 100 calories of tofu you eat, you get 11g of the muscle building stuff.  It contains 227mg of calcium and 1/2 cup is only 94 calories.  4oz of ground beef, by contrast, equals 331 calories.  BIG DIFFERENCE!  One thing to keep in mind- buy organic when choosing tofu.  Soybean farming uses a lot of gmo’s and organic is the only way to go to make sure you stay away from that nasty stuff.  Here’s a quick recipe I whipped up on Monday - I got home late and needed to eat- I threw whatever I had in the fridge and it turned out pretty well!  Enjoy.

1 package of marinated organic tofu (I used teriyaki) chopped into small cubes
2 cups cooked rice
1/2 onion, diced
1 can pinto beans, drained and rinsed
2 carrots, sliced on a diagonal
1/2 cup cherry tomatoes
1 tbsp coconut oil
Salsa- as a condiment

Heat oil in a large skillet.  Add onion, cook until translucent.  Add carrots and tofu, cook for about 3 minutes.  Add beans and rice.  Cook, stirring often until everything is heated through. Add cherry tomatoes and toss for about 1 minute.  Remove from heat, add salsa to taste- quick and easy!

“I love learning new important facts!  This week Heather and Jennifer asked me if I knew why ingredients were listed in a special order. I did not know the answer to this.  Well, there is a reason for listing ingredients in a special order!  The first ingredient listed is always the ingredient that the product has the most of.  The last ingredient listed has the least amount in the product. So it is very important to look at the ingredient list to make sure you are not eating something that has a large amount of an unhealthy ingredient!  I hope everyone enjoyed this fun fact!  Have a great week Nibblers!”
